Virgin Australia and Air Canada are ready to form a new alliance that will enable frequent flyers of their respective speeds and airplanes to gain and burn points at both airlines.
Effective January 19, it comes amid optimism about the prospect of an international travel resume.
It’s been more than four years since airlines first announced a “strategic cooperation agreement” in December 2016, ranging from codershare flights to mutual flyer benefits.
Since then, the airplane has been relaunched and the Virgin Australia has been rescued from collapse by new US owners Pine Capitol.
“COVID-19 has created a number of challenges to epidemic travel, especially in the form of border controls and route reductions. This new partnership should be ready for the recovery of Air Canada Airplane,” says Air Canada.
In the pre-epidemic days, Air Canada flew from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Vancouver, although the Melbourne-Vancouver route was set up as a seasonal service instead of operating year-round.
Vancouver served as a gateway for flights within Canada and, for some travelers, back to American cities such as Seattle and New York.
Speed points on Air Canada flights
As a rule, the number of velocity points earned on an Air Canada flight is based on the fare class and the number of miles flown.
Earnings table for raising velocity points on domestic Air Canada flights is here.
If you want to increase your status credits on that domestic Air Canada flight, this is where you land.
Virgin notes that discount economy fee classes S, D, L, A and K are “ineligible to earn level credit”.
On an International Air Canada flight, here is how many speed points you can get.
Similarly, here is the table for earning Velocity level credits for International Air Canada flights.
How many of your speed points will it take Thread Is it a domestic or international Air Canada flight?
Recovering points on all Virgin partner airlines is currently suspended, so Virgin did not share it at this time, but the airline says it will reveal it later in the day.
Fast access to Air Canada lounges
Says a Virgin Australia spokesman Executive traveler The consortium does not currently have mutual lounge access such as allowing Velocity Gold and Platinum members in Air Canada’s airport lounges.
With the resumption of international tours, Velocity members will be welcomed only at Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge, but not the more expensive signature suite lounge reserved for business class travelers.
Aeroplank miles on Virgin Australia flights
From an Air Canada perspective, airplane members can get airplane miles and status eligibility miles on all Virgin Australia flights, depending on the type of ticket and the distance flown: 25% off flying for cheap economic fare to 150% in full flexible business class.
Aeroplane miles can be redeemed against a Virgin Australia reservation with a C $ 39 booking fee on the Aeroplank Fixed Partner Award price list, but there is no additional charge for the carrier.
For example, a quick one-way trip between Sydney and Melbourne or Sydney and Brisbane would cost 8,000 airplane miles in the economy and 20,000 miles in business.
However, since the interim trek between Sydney and Perth falls within the 2,001-5000 mile bracket on the airplane schedule, it will cost 25,000 miles economically and 45,000 miles in business.
